This event is coordinated by Colorado Field Ornithologists.

The Colorado Field Ornithologists invite interested birders and nature enthusiasts to participate in the first annual Colorado Birding Challenge on May 8, 2021. The objectives of this county-based, Big Day event are:

  1. Raise funds to restore degraded grasslands in northern Mexico to improve habitat for wintering grassland birds whose populations are declining due to decreasing habitat, and build at least one radio telemetry tower in Colorado to help track the migratory routes, breeding sites, and wintering locations of threatened grassland bird species.

  2. Provide a fun, recreational event for the Colorado birding community and enable more people to engage in bird conservation.

  3. Generate eBird data for all 64 counties in Colorado on the same day.

Register and learn more at cobirds.org/CFO/COBC/.

Teams of 2-4 members chose one of five categories will bird within one Colorado county of their choice on Saturday, May 8, 2021.

  • Automobile

  • Green (all birding by non-motorized means such as walking, cycling, and kayaking; may drive to a destination)

  • Youth (high school age or younger; must have an adult driver)

  • Photo/Audio

  • Non-competing (this category allows individuals to participate)

Registration is free for CFO members. Registration for non-members is $50 (but a CFO membership is $25/35 depending on digital/print journal delivery).  More than 20 teams have already registered. CFO is aiming for a hundred teams or more and need your help to achieve this lofty goal.

Team participants are asked to solicit pledges. If you prefer not to collect pledges from your friends, you can still help conserve our threatened Colorado Grassland birds by pledging to sponsor a team yourself, or by making a general donation for conservation at cobirds.org/CFO/COBC/Pledge.aspx .

This year, 100% of funds collected from donations will be used to support grassland bird conservation projects managed by CFO partner, Bird Conservancy of the Rockies.

Learn more, join an open team in a county of your choice, or register a team today at cobirds.org/CFO/COBC/.
